Food miles - To Asia and back

Have you heard about the fish caught at Lakes Entrance sent to Thailand to be processed, packaged and frozen? Then it is imported into Australia. Yes, it was on the News tonight.

That makes it a 15 000 km round trip and six month storage. Hmmm... To make it worse, the packaging is deceptive, using iconic symbols that are clearly 'Aussie'...

What other 'fresh'(???) Aussie grown or caught food products are sent to Asian countries for processing and packaging before being imported?

Whole towns of people have been left without employment once processing and packaging facilities have relocated to Asia for 'cheap' labour. They can't afford to relocate once they have mortgages on homes that no-one wants to buy because of no work opportunities.

The food miles and months of delay in getting so-called 'fresh frozen' produce to our tables from Asia is deplorable. There is a recommended storage life for different frozen foodstuffs. We are being ripped off big-time when Aussie grown food is imported from Asian countries.

There are lots of these 'brands' that make it appear the food was all Astralian...

I seriously doubt that the strict controls of food safety are rigorously observed judging by the number of cases I have heard and seen of product recalls of Asian food imports just in my own local supermarkets.

It's a huge marketing con designed to deliberately mislead us into thinking we are buying 'All Australian' owned and produced (including processing and packaging)right here instead of in Asia.

I don't have a problem with buying Asian food products imported from Asia at all. In fact I do a regular shop at a variety of stores and markets supplying to such customers as I just love authentic Asian food. It's just (almost) like an overseas holiday to wander through and wonder what is in those packages when there is no English anywhere to be seen or heard.
