Federal Treasurer Wayne Swan insists none of the government's stimulus package was wasted despite more than $80 million worth of payments going to people living overseas.
Centrelink has confirmed 68,812 people living abroad received up to $1400 each, a total of $82.2 million, Fairfax reports.
The figure is 1.7 per cent of the $4.8 billion handed out to pensioners, self-funded retirees and some single parents in December last year.
The federal opposition says it shows that the Rudd government's stimulus package was not well thought out.
But Mr Swan says the measures have helped to keep the economy out of recession.
"The opposition will go to any lengths to hide their embarrassment over failing to support the stimulus," he told Network Ten on Sunday.
