People need to get more creative. Instead of just the hum drum of meeting over coffee. Why not expand the mind a little bit and do something a little more exciting then just sitting at a table to order a coffee and chat. If you chose something more creative it could alleviate the lapse of quietness when you run out of the things to discuss. What I am saying is comon people we can do so much better than that. There is a whole big world out there to explore. I am not saying there is nothing wrong with lets meet for coffee or tea why not try something more fullfilling then sitting in a coffee shop.

Ten Pin Bowling's a great idea: Neutral public area, takes longer than a cup of coffee and a ciggy at some random cafe - so you get to chat properly (and then head off to a cafe afterwards if things are going well) - does not have any "connotations" other than "a good fun time out", does not involve alcohol, and it's a hell of a lot of fun - so you enjoy yourselves and are more likely to be in a good frame of mind rather than nervously wondering what to say.
And if it turns out you have nothing in common enough to talk about, you can at least busy yourselves playing before saying farewell.
It is one way to have a conversation and do something fun at the same time
