How many of these can you identify here on PP?

I've met heaps of wombats, a few possums, some tassie devils, a roo or two and an assorted motley crew of our native wildlife species here at PP (either on forum via email and also in chat)

How many other native creatures could you identify and describe?

How would you define their characteristics?

We all now the description of a wombat

Just luve em Velvet..
mm

Now
are they all Aussie 'natives' aka 'indigenous species or are they exotics that have become 'naturalised'???
(even a feral pest???)

Well there are the 'foxes' -
Isn't there a fox-proof fence for that lot???

Good hunting tho...
THe pelts Make a nice fur coat...
I think I may have a foxskin here somewhere...

nah, I didn't kill it...

Ex did, very proud of it too...

sharp shooter, single rifle shot to the head, right between the eyes...

delighted in displaying his skills...

have rooskins too- courtesy of Ex - again displaying his rifle skills... no bullet holes on the skins - shot to the chest...

then there's the pig tusks ... (bow-hunting trophies)

Possums
There are any types of possums in Australia.
Here's just a lttle on the common brush-tailed type
...

The brush tailed possum like its close relative the ring tailed possum, is widespread in Australia and is a major pest since it was introduced to New Zealand.

Sometimes but not often, they get into a house by falling down a chimney. Don’t try to catch such a possum or you will have no ornaments left and you may be ornamented with large scratches. Rather open a clear way out and let it, with gentle persuasion, find the back door...

They can be a nuisance in the orchard as they will nibble at any fruit. The flower garden is also attractive and there are many reports of rose buds being amongst their favourites. They use their front paws to hold and to help pick fruit and leaves. They will leave small twigs and branches strewn on the ground below...

Apart from thumping on the roof they also can be quite noisy as they call to each other. It is a low throaty sound, like some machine being wound up...

Any ladies met a male of these species yet?
If you have a fragrant or perfumed garden
and are viewed as a blossom or a rosebud...
or an orchard...
or...
(get my drift...?)

Guess which Australian State or Territory has the hairy-nosed wombat as its Faunal Emblem?

Wombats
Wombats are stout, sturdy marsupials...
They have a large, blunt head with small eyes and ears, and a short, muscular neck. Their sharp claws and stubby, powerful legs make them great diggers. Wombats have been known to live for up to 27 years in captivity.
http://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/animals/Wombats.htm

They generally move slowly, and because of this are known for taking shortcuts, but when threatened they can reach up to 40 km/h (25 mph) and maintain that speed for up to 90 seconds. Wombats defend home territories centred on their burrows, and react aggressively to intruders.

Dingos and Tasmanian Devils prey on wombats. The wombat's primary defence is its toughened rear hide with most of the posterior made of cartilage. This, combined with its lack of a meaningful tail, makes it difficult for any predator that follows the wombat into its tunnel to bite and injure its target. When attacked, wombats dive into a nearby tunnel, using their rump to block a pursuing attacker.Wombats may allow an intruder to force its head over their back and then use its powerful legs to crush the skull of the predator against the roof of the tunnel, or drive it off with two-legged 'donkey' kicks.

Humans who accidentally find themselves in an affray with a wombat may find it best to scale a tree until the animal calms and leaves. Humans can receive puncture wounds from wombat claws as well as bites. Startled wombats can also charge humans and bowl them over, with the attendant risks of broken bones from the fall.

Wombats were often called badgers by early settlers because of their size and habit[/b]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wombat

So who knows any wombats of the human male kind?

I wouldn't want to get crushed by one...

Surly little b's they are too, lol...

Well you've all heard the joke, Haven't you???

They are quite cute really. They just need another lady wombat or three to be happy...
Lots like to leave notches on their burrows and boast about them when they are challenged ...

lol
Wombats wok...

Just waiting for viewers to reach the 60 mark...

Why no comments so far?

We've all met possums and wombats galore, but what about those bilbies?
